Warsaw School of Information Technology, WIT

Warsaw School of Information Technology, WIT (Wyższa Szkoła Informatyki Stosowanej i Zarządzania) was founded in 1996 upon the initiative of the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences represented by the Foundation of System Sciences Propagation. The Foundation has been established by the Polish Academy of Sciences and is supervised by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

WIT is licensed to award Bachelor’s degrees in: Computer Science, Management, Management and Marketing, Informatics and Econometrics, Graphics, and Master’s degrees in: Computer Science, Management.

Much of the classes are held in computer laboratories. Each laboratory intended for students is equipped with 22 computers (auditoria with specialized graphic software are the exception – there are 17 computers), white blackboard and projector. Students have two net printers at their disposal.

Computer laboratories at WIT are provided with the following software:

  • Microsoft (we are the participants of the programs Microsoft MSDN AA, AATP, Select) (software: Windows series operating system, Developer Tools for Visual Studio, servers Windows, server MSSQL).
  • RedHat Linux (software Fedora CORE 16).
  • Oracle (program OAI); (software Oracle Database 11g, Oracle Internet Developer Suite).
  • Corel (Program CLP); (software Corel Draw, Corel iGrafix Process).
  • SAP ERP.
  • IBM (program: IBM Scholars Program, Ariadna); (software: WebSphere Application Server WebSphere Studio, DB2 Universal Database, Rational Suite Enterprise, SPSS, CPLEX).
  • Adobe (software: Adobe Master Collection).
  • Autodesk (software: AutoCAD, 3D Studio, Maya 2009).
  • MapInfo (software: Mapinfo).
  • MAAD (software: Micro Saint).
  • Altera (software: Max+).

The software is regularly changed and updated. Each student has his/her account. With this every WIT network user has the access to the Internet as well as to the mailbox. The account means not only the mailbox, but also to shell account, intended for distance working. The user of WIT network is provided with his/her own network drive, can create websites based on PHP/ASP.NET technologies and is able to use the account both from the school’s network and outside.

The School cares about the regular exchange of computer equipment. Purchases of the equipment is carried out on schedule.

High quality of education, teaching and scientific research goals are being achieved by providing students with one of the most state-of-the-art computer centers at Polish universities.

There is more than 400 computers in 20 laboratories. Each laboratory is connected to the local network and the Internet. The whole school’s network is monitored using specialized software running in real time.

Since 2006 the WIT has a WAN network which uses the most innovative and up-to-date Gibabit Ethernet technology. The links of the backbone network have 1 Gb/s capacity (10 Gb/s in the future), in turn the connection speed of the particular LANs is 1 Gb/s. WIT has nine independent Internet links and their combined bandwidth is over 2 Gb/s (one of the quickest links in Poland). The links use the dynamic routing protocol BGP. The school’s computer network covers two buildings connected with optical fibers. It is supported by 40 servers with a total capacity of 30 TERABYTES of disk drives. The local area networks (LAN) in school buildings are built in the media layer in technology 1000BaseT.

The central server in WIT supports more than 5000 accounts and on its discs (3TB) holds more than 10 million files. From 2011 the data are kept on disk array in order to ensure increased reliability. WIT also has one of the largest in Poland, caching-servers in 3 cache – its buffer is 400 GB, that allows saving a Web page which has been opened in the past five weeks.

Warsaw School of Information Technology (WIT) cooperates with the Systems Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) and with the other institutes of the Academy. A close relationship with the Systems Research Institute as well as with other units of the Division IV Technical Sciences PAN determines the character of the studies at WIT. In addition, the School employs university professors from domestic universities: University of Warsaw, Warsaw University of Technology, Warsaw School of Economics, Military University of Technology, National Defence University, the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Due to the expanded foreign cooperation eminent professors of foreign universities are invited to conduct the lectures. Among them there are also Poles living in Canada, the USA and France who are the creators of the latest world achievements in the field of information technology, computing, management, mathematical modeling. They share their experience with students.

Many graduates of WIT go on now studying for doctoral degree, and in January 2010 the first WIT graduate was awarded with the doctoral degree in the field of computer science.

The essential for every academy is cooperation with work places in order to organize professional traineeships and internships for students. In view of this WIT has signed the agreement on cooperation inter alia with the following companies and organizations:

  • Governmental, self-governmental and non-governmental organizations, the Polish Chamber of Commerce, regional office of Masovian Voivodeship, town hall of Milanówek, Adam Smith Center, Bumar Elektronika S.A.,
  • IT companies: Oracle Polska, Asseco Poland, IBM, Infovide-MatriX SA, MIS, Extor.

From 2008 WIT is co-organizer of the summer research internships. The subjects of the internships are issues concerning mathematics, computer science and Research & Development. Summer research internships result in annual participation of WIT in the science festival in Warsaw.

Bachelor’s degree programs

Bachelor study program is worked out in such a way that after each year students obtain specific competences, enabling them to perform increasingly multi-faceted IT jobs. First year of study is devoted mainly to essential fundamentals of mathematics as well as computer building (computer organization and architecture, fundamentals of logic circuits). Students become familiar with legal and economic bases for the business activity and philosophy. Students obtain basic education and acquire skills in programming in C language, knowledge of MS Office applications, including the ability of programming in VBA. Second year of study covers additional mathematics and IT courses, including knowledge of databases and operating systems and the ability of advanced programming and basic programming in the Internet. On the third year students become well acquainted with computer network issues, including security and programming networks, as well as expand knowledge in the chosen specialty. The fourth year of Bachelor studies, which lasts only one semester in full-time system, is intended to extend the knowledge in selected specialized areas and to introduce basic issues of artificial intelligence. Students prepare their theses. Professionally oriented Bachelor of Science degree is aimed at creating the IT engineer-specialist who is self-reliant in running the project without long-lasting additional training. It is also intended to provide graduates with solid theoretical basis which enable further training on their own.

  • In recent years a growing need for creative computer graphic designers efficiently using specialized computer software can be noticed. To meet these challenges, our goal is to educate the student, who combines the artistic sensitivity with the state-of-the-art IT technologies.
  • The program of the 1st cycle degree in graphics at WIT is designed to teach how to develop independent and creative thinking; it forms a creative attitude to art, provides deep and comprehensive knowledge of graphic arts regarding their workshop and technological peculiarities. The subject area is adapted to technological developments and changing trends in computer graphics. It also corresponds with the needs of the labour market.
  • The role and significance of the multimedia techniques in curricula are determined by the location of the graphic degree course in the Faculty of Computer Science at WIT, which is a place providing the constantly upgrading computer laboratories.
  • The program of the 1st cycle degree in graphics at WIT within the specialty the Multimedia techniques enables students to acquire two categories of skills:
  • First category connected with the degree course is based on acquiring knowledge of the traditional forms of graphics such as: drawing, painting, mastering artistic sense, artistic imagination, creative thinking.
  • Second category – acquiring knowledge and skills connected with multimedia. Graduates of this course are fully prepared in terms of art and technics to create two- or three-dimensional projects, 2D and 3D virtual world on the computer screen.

E-government means using Information and communication technologies in public administration, which is also accompanied by reorganization and improvement of qualifications of the administration staff. It is the element of a wider concept of the development of the information society and the knowledge-based economy.

All of courses at WIT are in Polish.

From October foreign students of the first year (full-time and part-time) are provided for payless course of Polish language.
